Just what is all of the fuss about heart pine? How is it different from what I see in my home center?

Lowenstein Collection

In its day, the Lowenstein Brothers Department Store in Memphis, Tennessee was the premier retail emporium where wealthy cotton merchants bought the latest European fashions for their wives and daughters. A century later saw the center of commerce shift away from the once bustling downtown and the building remained vacant for decades.

Memphians were shocked to see their beloved Lowenstein Building go up in flames. Fortunately, Old Beam was able to rescue over 70% of the valuable heart pine.

In 2006, a massive renovation project was interrupted by a tragic fire which completely gutted the Victorian building, but not before Old Beam Flooring & Millwork had reclaimed the heart pine floors and rafters.

The main support beams, which were to remain as part of the renovation project were deeply charred and had to come out. Slicing into the charred remains of these massive timbers revealed the most beautiful heart pine that we have ever encountered. This limited collection, a vanishing slice of history, is available in a very limited supply.
